Founded by Emily Sanderson in 2008, Canterbury Résumé gets its name from Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, written about his traveling companions during his 14th-century pilgrimage. In the book's prologue, each of the characters are identified by their professions in brief descriptions that are comparable to the individuals’ résumés. Chaucer, and it is believed a writing staff who assisted him, considered his audience as well as the message he wanted to get across when writing his classic stories.
Pilgrimages are defined as a journey often in the act of religious devotion, often as a way to change life-journey paths, but pilgrims are also defined simply as travelers. Each of us may experience something similar to a soul-searching pilgrimage when we change jobs, pursue a career shift, or when we begin our careers. About a third of Geoffrey Chaucer’s companions were frequent travelers and were required to travel for their professions, whether they were knights who fought in wars, or merchants, attorneys, or millers seeking better opportunities.
Political and economic changes that impact the marketability of certain professions experienced by professionals today are nothing new; and just as in times past, networking and the distribution of one’s job qualifications through a well crafted résumé are sure ways to get the job you seek.
